Focus Issues on Advanced Unmanned Systems Research

Unmanned systems have been actively researched and developed since 1990s. Now they have evolved into diverse platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), and unmanned underwater vehicles(UUV). Recently, active researches are performed for enhanced autonomy and collaborative operation capabilities in multi-agent scenarios. In addition, a fresh look is given to the design of unmanned systems for maximized capabilities since they do not require human presence on the vehicle. In this talk, various topics of unmanned systems will be presented and discussed in the area of novel platforms, advanced guidance and control methods, multi-agent coordination, and implementation issues based on the presenter’s past and current research activities at UC Berkeley and KAIST.

David Hyunchul Shim received the B.S. and the M.S. degrees in mechanical design and production engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991, 1993, and 2000, respectively. From 1993 to 1994, he was with Hyundai Motor Company, Korea, as transmission design engineer. From 2001 to 2005, he was with Maxtor Corporation, California, USA as staff servo engineer, specialized in advanced servo control systems for hard disk drives. From 2005 to 2007, he was with UC Berkeley as principal engineer, in charge of Berkeley Aerobot Team, working on advanced UAV research. In 2007, he joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering at KAIST, South Korea as Assistant Professor. He is now Associate Professor working on various research projects on unmanned systems in the area of novel platform development, control, multi-agent coordination and system implementation.
