Novel Toolboxes for Molecular and Cellular Biology Studies

Speaker: Dr. Donghyuk Kim

Departmnet of Bioengineering, University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Date: Monday October 19, 2015, 4PM

Place: #1101 @ W1-3 Bldg.

The human body is a complex network of molecules, organelles, cells, tissues and organs: an uncountable number of interactions and transformations interconnect all the system’s components. Technical difficulties have frequently limited researchers from closely observing cellular biology that occurs in the human body. My research in general aims to develop novel tools that assess molecular and mechanical signatures of cells and their functional behaviors in a simple, quantitative, and high-throughput manner. In the seminar, I will be presenting my most recent efforts in the sense of better observing cell biology: microfluidics-based mechanophenotyping that quantitatively analyze cell mechanical properties from thousands of cells per second, and molecular logic gate-based immunoassay that approaches single molecule level sensitivity.
