테러범과 과학자: 생화학 무기와 국제 사회의 대응

1300여명이 사망한 시리아 화학무기 참사는 올해 일어난 가장 끔찍한 전쟁 중 하나였습니다. 2013 노벨 평화상을 화학무기금지기구(OPCW)가 수상한 것도 이러한 위험성이 대중에게 인식되었기에 가능했던 일입니다. 생화학 무기에 대한 국제적인 관심과 우려가 높아지고 상황에서 이번 대중강연을 통해 생화학 무기의 실체와, 무기의 대중화, 그리고 전쟁 앞에 선 과학자의 가치관을 다룰 예정입니다.

Terrorists and Scientists: Biological Weapons and its impact on Global Society

Do you still remember the tragedy caused by the use of chemical weapons that happened in Syria this year? This particular incident, which received spotlight from the mass media and the international community, instilled a sense of fear against chemical weapons to the public. The fact that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year also highlights the growing global awareness of these weapons. As the leading expert of chemical weapons in United Nations Security Council, Mr. Terence Taylor has actively participated in solving global conflicts relevant to chemical weapons, especially the tragic incident that happened in Syria. Under the topic of ‘Terrorists and Scientists’, he will deliver a speech explaining his personal experience with chemical weapons, the current phenomenon of the popularization of weapons, and the perspectives on weapons that scientists should take.
