Conventional atmospheric and vacuum distillation are highly energy-intensive processes in petroleum refining, consuming over 1,100 TWh annually and emitting more

than 160 million metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year. As an energy-saving alternative, this study demonstrates that porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes can

serve not only as support layers but also as effective crude-oil fractionation membranes. Under tangential flow, PAN membranes selectively enrich lighter hydrocarbon

fractions such as naphtha and kerosene with stable performance over four weeks. The selectivity arises from the self-limiting deposition of heavy hydrocarbons inside the

membrane pores, which narrows the effective pore size to the sub-2-nm range. Also, process simulations suggest that PAN-membrane-based pre-fractionation could

substantially reduce energy use, cooling water demand, and CO₂ emissions compared with conventional distillation.
