The 18th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization

The 18th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (ICCDU 2021) was held from July 18th to 22nd in Jeju, Republic of Korea, by KAIST.

The conference was held under the theme of ‘technology to capture and utilize carbon dioxide’ for climate change, proceeded as a virtual conference. 31 world-renowned scholars in the fields of material engineering, chemistry, and biochemical engineering attended as a speaker, including Prof. Liang-Shih Fan at Ohio State University, Prof. Annemie Bogaerts at University of Antwerp, Prof. Tao Zhang at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Christopher W. Jones at Georgia Institute of Technology and Prof. Sang Yup Lee at KAIST.

The International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (ICCDU) was established in 1991 for the purpose of research on carbon capture, storage, and utilization, and have been advanced as a place for promoting academic exchange in the relevant fields. About 250 researchers from all over the world participated in this international conference, and more than 130 innovative and state-of-the-art achievements were presented, encompasing 5 major fields–1) thermal and catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide, 2) electrochemical and photochemical conversion, 3) biotechnology process, 4) carbon dioxide capture process, 5) evaluation of the life-cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis for carbon dioxide utilization.

A representative academic journal in the field of carbon dioxide utilization published by Elsevier, Journal of CO2 Utilization, published a special issue to share the achievements of cutting-edge research for the establishment of a sustainable society.

ICCDU has been held in different parts of the world every year, while it was held online for the first time this year due to COVID-19, and organized by Prof. Jae W. Lee (head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at KAIST, Editor of Journal of CO2 Utilization). Prof. Lee said that “ICCDU 2021 will help us understand the climate change and provide a valuable opportunity for scholars from all over the world to form a forum for academic exchange and networking.”
