In 2020, Professor Seung Bin Park and Professor Yong Keun Chang, retired and became Professor Emeritus of the CBE department.
Professor Park obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1988. He joined the CBE department at KAIST in 1989 and served many important roles. Professor Park was the head of the CBE department from 2004 and 2010. He also served as the Dean of the College of Engineering, then as the Vice President of External Affairs and Development of KAIST. He is known as an expert in green processing of new materials and alternative energy by photocatalysis. He authored numerous publication in these areas, notably the preparation of functional nanomaterials using aerosol process and the design of photocatalysts and reactor systems for alternative energy generation.
Professor Chang obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1987, and joined the CBE department in 1988. Professor Chang is also an active member of the Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB). He served multiple important roles in the organization, including the Director in General (2005), Vice President (2008), and President (2012). From 2015 to 2020, He also served as the Director of the Advanced Biomass R&D Center. Professor Chang's BioSystems Engineering Laboratory focused on the development of bioprocessing technologies including fermentation process development, bioreactor design and control, and bioseparation. In recent years, the lab also served as a research hub for the Advanced Biomass R&D Center to develop microalgae-based biorefinery.
