KAIST and Tsinghua hold its 2nd annual workshop
KAIST-Tsinghua Workshop on Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Society

Following the great success of our first joint workshop in November 2017, the KAIST CBE Department and the Chemical Engineering Department at Tsinghua University held a second joint workshop on July 20, 2018. The theme of the second workshop was "Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Society", and it was held at the KAIST campus. Seven professors were invited to give technical presentations from each of the two universities and many professors and graduate students participated in this event. Participants from both KAIST and Tsinghua had a great time and many interesting research ideas were discussed.

The workshop started with a welcome address from Professor Jay H. Lee who is the Associate Vice President of International Office in KAIST. Professor Lee also helped initiate the first workshop with Professor Jinsong Zhao in Tsinghua. Following the welcome remarks, the department chairs of KAIST (Professor Jae W. Lee) and the chair of the Department Council of Tsinghua (Professor Tiefeng Wang) gave informative introductions of their respective departments. Although the two departments have different sizes and histories, we learned that they actually shared many similar philosophies regarding both education and research.

There were 14 very interesting technical presentations from KAIST and Tsinghua. From the KAIST side: Professor Hee-Tae Jung talked about new nanolithography and its applications to opto-electronic devices; Professor Jae W. Lee talked about derivation of carbon materials from carbon dioxide; Professor Dong-Yeun Koh talked about next-generation membranes for large-scale hydrocarbon separation; Professor Siyoung Choi talked about processable high internal phase Pickering emulsions; Professor Minkee Choi talked about rational design of solid adsorbent for post-combustion carbon dioxide capture via temperature swing; Professor Sung Gap Im talked about initiated chemical vapor deposition: a simple, versatile tool for functional polymer coatings; Professor Hyun Uk Kim talked about systems biology approaches for drug discovery and development.

The day-long event culminated with a small gift exchange ceremony, where the two departments exchanged a small token of appreciation for each other's participation in the workshop. Most importantly, the participants from both universities really enjoyed the time together. KAIST and Tsinghua decided to invite graduate students as poster presenters in the next workshop which will be held in 2019 at Tsinghua again!
