The research team has revealed how ceria (CeO2), a widely used environmental catalyst, employs oxygen through distinct mechanisms depending on its particle size. Ceria, a metal oxide

composed of cerium and oxygen, is well known for its ability to store and release oxygen, making it a key material in catalytic reactions for environmental purification.

The study demonstrates that simply controlling the size of the catalyst enables selective use of oxygeneither directly from the air or from oxygen stored inside the catalystdepending

on the reaction conditions. This design principle was simultaneously validated through advanced experimental analyses and artificial intelligence
based simulations.
