Research Overview

Chemical and biomolecular engineering is a multi-disciplinary field that integrates natural sciences such as chemistry and biology with various engineering principles and practices. Starting from traditional chemical engineering principles (e.g. mass and energy balance, reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena), chemical and biomolecular engineers apply this knowledge to develop and to produce new chemical materials, electronic components, biological and biomolecular materials, and medical products. In order to solve some of the world’s most important scientific problems and to tackle various technological challenges, collaboration between researchers who possess different skills and expertise is imperative.  Accordingly, our department exerts a great deal of effort, formulating cooperative and collaborative research environment for both the faculty members and the students. 
The department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at KAIST is ranked as one of the best research departments in Korea.  We are actively putting efforts to position ourselves as one of the global leaders in both research and education.  Our department has taken a major role in fostering multi-disciplinary collaboration amongst different departments and fields.
